2 Week Countdown!

We are at the two week mark!  The countdown has started and I'm getting excited about getting home.  But first things first.  We have a trip to take!

Kevin and I are leaving on an overnight train tonight to Rome.  It's our first overnight train so I'm interested to see how it goes and what our set-up looks like.  Getting the tickets proved a bit difficult so I'm hoping it was all worth it.  Initially, we went to our train station in Vipiteno on Monday to get the tickets and the machine was broken and there wasn't a teller working.  So we went to Innsbruck to buy them yesterday, but the lady there told us we couldn't buy them from her because it was an inner-Italy trip.  I know this is nonsense because we always get our inner-Italy tickets from Innsbruck (because they speak better English there than in Vipiteno).  We thought we'd try the machine in Brennero on the way home and it turned out their machine was broken too.  Since today was our last chance to get tickets, we woke up bright and early and headed to the train station.  The machine was still broken, but the teller was there and was super helpful in getting us our tickets even with our broken German and his broken English.

We get into Rome tomorrow morning at 6:08AM and are going to spend the day and night there.  Saturday, we are heading to Sorrento for three days/two nights.  In those three days, we will also check out Pompeii, Capri, and Naples.  Everything was booked through a tour group, Viator, which we have used a few different times and the nice thing is all transportation, meals, tours, and accommodations are included....one less thing to worry about.

Once we leave Sorrento, we are going back to Rome for 2 days/nights.  We want to check out Palatine Hill and the Roman Forums, visit the catacombs of San Callisto, take a tour of the Jewish Ghetto, and do some people watching in Piazza Navona.  The last time we were in Rome, we got engaged so I'm not sure this trip can top that, but I'm holding out hope.

After we leave Rome, we are going to Florence for 2 days.  Last time we were in Florence, we didn't get to the Accademia Gallery to see Michelangelo's David so we definitely want to do that.  We are also thinking about taking a Chianti tour and visiting Siena, but nothing has been booked yet.  One things for sure, we are eating more Jersey Shore pizza.

Once we get back to Vipiteno, the countdown will be at 6 days.  In between packing and cleaning, I'll be sure to post pictures and an update of our trip.

Spring Shopping

Packing my clothes bag to move for the season is a task for me.  It takes hours and hours stretched across a few days to complete the process perfectly.  First I make a list (because all great things start with a list) and then I get down to the business of actually tackling what is in my closet (or should I say my parent's spare closet that houses all my shit).  I lay it all out on the bed and then start picking and choosing what will go and what will stay.

When coming to Vipiteno I knew it was going to be cold.  Sweaters, jeans, boots, coats, scarves, gloves, and hats were must-haves.  Originally, I had packed a pair of black flats, a jacket, and some short-sleeved shirts, but I quickly took those out after looking at the weather averages for the months I would be here.  I didn't want to waste precious space on clothes I would never wear.  I did that our first year overseas and ended up only wearing about half the stuff I brought.  Plus, that space can be used for an extra pair of sweatpants (which is what I wear 80% of the time).

Well the weather here has warmed up quickly, with the exception of the past few days.  There have actually even been a couple days where it was 'hot.'  Luckily I bought a few 3/4 length tops that have come in handy.  But I only have boots and jeans to wear with them.  Yesterday, Kevin and I decided to take a trip to Innsbruck to do some Spring shopping.  I figured I could buy one pair of flats, one pair of jean capris, and a few short sleeved tops.

I usually have no problem shopping, but yesterday I had this mental block.  I couldn't fathom buying things that I already have at home.  I never found capris I liked, the only pair of flats I liked weren't in my size, and all I came away with was one t-shirt.  Kevin had no problems at all.  He picked up a pair of shoes, two pairs of shorts, and four shirts.  Needless to say, I'm bummed out that my shopping excursion was a train wreck.  I need to redeem myself so I've decided that round two will take place sometime next week.  Wish me luck!

Come Back!

I cannot even explain how much fun it was having Jana and Kathy here last week. I am so sad that they are gone and I just wish they would come back, but I know that isn't going to happen.

The day we went to pick them up in Salzburg was miserable. It was raining, snowing, or sleeting the whole drive there. Luckily, once we got to Salzburg there was only a light rain. Since we were running a little late, Kevin dropped me off at the train station where I ran in to meet them. Their train was slightly delayed so everything worked out perfectly. I was standing on their platform for about 2 minutes before they pulled up.

We decided to take a hop on, hop off bus tour to see the whole city. Then, from there we walked around and saw the stuff we really wanted to see and did some shopping. We had an amazing meal at the Sternbräu in the Old Town, saw where Mozart lived, and saw where the scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed.

Our lunch at the Sternbräu.

We spent our second day in Innsbruck and the weather was perfect. We took two cars so Kevin could leave early to get back to work so that left the Tomasewski women's lives in my hands. And I would like to say that my driving was impeccable. I might have finally gotten the hang of it after 4 months.

We started our day off with some coffees and decided to go to the top of Bergisel Ski Jump to get a view of all of Innsbruck. We were told that it was a 10-15 minute walk and then there was a tram to take you to the top. Well, it turned out to be about a 30 minute walk, uphill most of the time. Then once you make it to Bergisel, there is a lift to take you to the top I must say all the walking was worth it.

What an amazing view of Innsbruck.

Showing the hubby some love.

Once we made it back to Old Town, it was time for Kevin to go. Us girls walked around Old Town, did some shopping, checked out the river, and had more coffees before heading back.

Jana and Kathy taking a break from shopping.

We decided to show Kathy and Jana our tiny little town on their third day here. There isn't much to see, but we figured a light day would be good for them. We had Spritzes and Hugos in the square and did some shopping. That night Kevin had an away game so us girls went for pizza at the Derby because no trip to Vipiteno is complete without a pizza from there.

Another gorgeous day.

Day four we were up bright and early so we could make our 7:30am train to Venice. We got there, checked into our hotel, and set out. We started with pizza (of course), went to the Rialto Bridge, checked out St. Mark's Basilica, and walked along the Grand Canal. At around 4:00, we decided it was time to sit down for a drink. From there, we pretty much made up our own bar crawl. We drank Prosecco, Spritzes, Bellini's, white wine, and red wine. It felt like well after midnight when we got back to our room, but it turned out it was only 10:30 and we were getting old.

Every Italian city tour should start with pizza.

Pass the Prosecco, please.

Day five started off with Jana and me being locked in the hotel room. Kathy got up before us and took the key with her (locking us in). After Jana and I got ready for breakfast, we realized the key was gone, we were locked in, and had no electricity (the key controls the electricity). We didn't know how to call reception from the hotel phone and my phone's charge lasted just long enough for her to tell the receptionist that we were locked in Room #114. Needless to say, the lady at reception was not impressed with us regardless of how much we apologized. And to top it off, while we were locked in the room, the man across the road from us was running around his apartment naked from the waist down.

After being rescued and having breakfast, we headed back to St. Mark's Square to take pictures and then headed out to find the cutest gondolier (per Jana's request). We met Niccolo and headed out for our gondola ride. In my previous two visits to Venice, I had never done a gondola ride so I was pretty excited. Niccolo provided us with tons of information about Venice and even sang to us. Before leaving Venice, we grabbed lunch, walked along the Grand Canal again, and grabbed some last minute gifts.

I now know why they say a gondola ride in Venice is a must.

Niccolo was full of information that I forgot already.

From Venice we made our way to Verona by train. Since it was already about 6:30, we basically checked in to the hotel, dropped our stuff, and went out. We walked for a bit and then stopped to have dinner at an amazing restaurant, Ristorante Greppia. All the pastas there are homemade in-house and it was the best pasta I've had since I arrived in Italy.

Spaghetti with black and green olives, spinach ravioli with a creamy tomato sauce, and gnocchi with radicchio and mascarpone cheese...Delicious!

Day six was another gorgeous day in Verona. We checked out the Arena, the Roman Theatre (which I recommend), saw Juliet's balcony, and had pizza...again. Verona is pretty small and everything is close together so 24 hours there was enough for us.

The fountain in Piazza delle Erbe.

Taking it all in at the Arena.

I am so lucky to have had these two amazing women come to visit Kevin and me. These are memories we will have for a lifetime and I can't wait to reminisce about them in the years to come.

Thanks ladies! Love you both! XX

I'm so excited, I'm losing sleep!

When I told my best friend, Jana, that Kevin and I were going to be in Italy this year she swore to me she was going to come visit. I, of course, didn't believe her. I cannot tell you how many times people have said they were going to visit us in our 3 hockey seasons overseas, yet we have only had visitors twice...Kevin's parents our first year and Marina and Sergei, our Latvian visitors, in January.

Well, Jana kept her word and Kevin and I will be picking her and her wonderful mother, Kathy (also known as Momma T), up tomorrow. They flew into Munich on Thursday and have been doing some sightseeing and I still can't believe we are in the same time zone. Tomorrow morning, they are taking a train to Salzburg and we are going to meet them, check out the city, and then head back to Vipiteno. The plan is to check out Vipiteno and Innsbruck on Monday and Tuesday and then us girls are heading to Venice and Verona for 3 days (Sorry Kevin, you have to work).

I have been looking forward to their visit since Jana bought her plane ticket. This past week, I've been having trouble sleeping because I am so excited! I've kept busy by preparing for their visit though. I got my hair done (so I don't look a hot mess in our pictures), our refrigerator is stocked, the house is clean, the laundry is done, and the car is fueled up and ready to go. In less than 24 hours, Kevin and I will be taking in the sights of Salzburg with the Tomasewski ladies!

Only one more day and I'll be reunited with these lovely ladies!

Pizzaholic

I have a problem and I'm not afraid to admit it. I love pizza! In the States, it is bad, but being in Italy has only made my addiction worse. I feel like an alcoholic sitting in a bar...I always want pizza. Usually I get my fix because we get pizza on game nights, but this week there isn't a game and I am feinding. I already had pizza on Monday when I made calzones, but now, it's Thursday and I need it again.

Back home, I am a thick crust or deep dish girl. My favorite pizza in the whole world is a ham and mushroom stuffed pizza from Giordano's. Over here everything is thin crust and back home I would never order thin crust, but recently I have fallen in love with it. I look forward to trying new things and new pizzas wherever we go. I took a menu from the Derby, the place we go after games, and translated it so I never have the same pizza twice.

Apparently, I also have a problem with taking pictures of pizza.

Oh, Giordano's...we miss you!

Debbie, the other wife, and I had no problem showing these pizzas who's in charge.

Focus on the pizza, not me. I was hungover and look disgusting.

Even pizza on the go is delicious

Our Latvian Guests

Our friends, Marina and Sergei, arrived on Wednesday from Latvia and we are so excited to have them here. It has been four years since we've seen each other when the guys played together in Fort Wayne. Thanks to Facebook and Skype, Marina and I have stayed in contact over the years and I was thrilled when she told me they were going to come for a visit.

Unfortunately, Marina and Sergei ran into some trouble on the way here and had one of their bags stolen at the rental car place in Milan. As they were getting in their car, a woman came up to them to ask them where the rental office was and in the 20 seconds they were talking to her, her 'partner in crime' stole one of their bags they had set directly behind them. By the time they realized what happened, it was too late. What is wrong with people?

After they counted their losses, which included a GPS, camera, phone chargers, underwear, and Sergei's homework for school, they made the 3 hour drive to Vipiteno. We spent the night catching up and having drinks. Thursday, we hit up the outlet malls and Kevin's hockey game.

Yesterday, we decided to go to Innsbruck to watch the Youth Olympic Games. We were excited to see the ski jumping competition, but once we got into Innsbruck and saw the weather, we had a feeling it was cancelled (and it was). After sliding down the hillside and almost getting stuck, we thought it would be better to check out an event that was played indoors. When we got to the stadium, speed skating was going on so we caught the end of it, but no Lativan or Americans were competing in the finals. We made our way inside and found out women's hockey was going on so we checked it out for awhile. Kazakhstan was playing Sweden in the semi-finals. We only stayed for one period because it was painful to watch. The final score ended up being 11-0 with Sweden outshooting Kazakhstan 74-1.

The boys are excited for some women's hockey.

We will spend today in Bolzano shopping, meeting up with friends, and watching the hockey game. Hopefully the weather cooperates with us.

In the last week!

Last week, the coaches decided to take a look at the scheduling because some of them were working weeks straight without a day off. In honesty, I can probably count on both my hands the number of days that Kevin has had off since I arrived two months ago. And that includes his time off for Christmas, New Year's, and two hockey breaks (for the pro team).

This past week they decided to give Kevin two days off and we wanted to take full advantage of our time. On Tuesday, we decided to head to Innsbruck to do some shopping to get ready for our guests coming this week. Our first stop was IKEA and as we were pulling in, I pointed out a guy that looked a lot like one of our roommates a few years ago. Well, Kevin didn't agree with me, but he did think the guy's friend looked familiar. After we parked the car, we started walking towards IKEA and the two guys. The one guy called out Kevin's name and as we moved closer, Kevin realized that he played hockey with the guy six years ago in Phoenix. Apparently, the guy is playing hockey in the second league in Italy (about 2 hours from us) and was in Innsbruck for a few days hanging out. How random is that? Seriously, what are the chances that we would be in Innsbruck, at the IKEA, at the exact same time (when neither of us live there)? It's nuts!

Moving on...our shopping day was a success. We got tons of good smelling candles for the apartment and this is a big deal because they are hard to come by in Italy. I got two dresses; one, I am planning on wearing for my cousin's rehearsal dinner in June so I don't have to worry about that anymore. And we loaded up on taco and fajita seasoning, which you can't find in our town.

Kevin's other day off was Sunday (yesterday) and we spent that on the ski slopes. We woke up bright and early, got bundled up, and drove the whole two minutes to the gondola that would take us up the mountain. Instead of ski school, we opted for a private lesson for me from Stefano. Luckily, I had met him a few times previously because he is friends with some of the guys on the hockey team and a bonus is he speaks English pretty well.

My lesson got started on the exercise track and I managed to stay on my feet the whole time. I also warned Stefano during this time that a lot of cuss words would be flying out of my mouth so he shouldn't be shocked. After about 20 minutes, he thought we were ready to conquer the blue course (I did not agree) and we hopped on the lift. We chatted as we were up there and it never occurred to me until we were almost to the course that I had no idea how the hell to get off the lift. Do I jump? Do I fall? Oh no...apparently, I have to ski. But I don't know how to do that...that's why I'm taking a lesson! Well, it was pretty disastrous. Stefano gave me a 1-2-3 count, I stood up, and started sliding forward and down, but couldn't stop. But don't worry, I was caught before I fell.

We continued down the blue course with a couple breaks in between. Three and four-year-old kids flew past me and made me even more embarrassed than I already was. About half way down, I couldn't feel my legs anymore so I told Stefano my legs were like jello, which he didn't understand. My right leg had atrophy, my left leg wouldn't do what I wanted it to do, and my brain was on overload. Luckily, we made it to the bottom of the course (it only took us 45 minutes) and Stefano gave my report to Kevin. Apparently, I did a great job (yeah right, you liar), but I need more lessons (thanks Captain Obvious). At that point, I was done skiing and wanted to sit for a bit. Kevin and I grabbed a coffee and then I let him ski for a while longer before we headed home. All-in-all, it was fun, but hard work. But I look forward to getting back out there once my legs feel normal again.
